Shakti Trail In West Bengal

West Bengal Shakti Peeth Tour Package From Kolkata

Nalhati town derives its name from the Shakti Peeth Nalhateshwari temple, where, according to mythology, the throat of goddess Shakti, referred to as “nala,” fell. This temple is among the 51 Shakti Peethas in India.

Situated near Rampurhat in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, Tarapith is a small temple town renowned for its Tantric temple and adjacent cremation grounds, known as Maha Smashan, where tantric rituals are conducted. Dedicated to the fearsome Tantric aspect of the Devi, goddess Tara, the Tantric Hindu temple in Tarapith is a major center for Shaktism. The town gets its name from its significance as the primary center for Tara worship. Tarapith is also notable for Sadhak Bamakhepa, known as the “mad saint,” who dedicated his life to the worship of Tara Maa, residing in the cremation grounds and practicing yoga and tantric arts under the guidance of Kailashpathi Baba. Bamakhepa’s ashram is located on the banks of the Dwaraka river, close to the Tara temple.

While Bakreshwar is renowned for its Shiva temple and therapeutic hot springs, it is equally significant as a place of power for goddess devotees. The Mahishamardini Mandir in Bakreshwar attracts worshipers of the divine mother, and the town, named after its resident male god, brings together the spiritual traditions of Shiva and Shakti in a harmonious temple complex. Unlike the red vestments typically seen in Shakti temples, the priesthood in Bakreshwar wears white dhotis. The town is home to several geothermal hot springs, believed to have healing properties, with people seeking relief from various ailments by bathing in the mineral-rich waters.

In the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district, Kankalitala stands as a temple town in West Bengal. It is recognized as one of the Shakti Peethas, where the bone of goddess Parvati is believed to have fallen, now present in the Kankalitala town. The Kankalitala Temple is dedicated to goddess Parvati, and its origin story is linked to the mythology of Daksha yaga and Sati’s self-immolation. Shakti Peethas are revered as holy abodes formed from the body parts of Sati Devi when Shiva carried and wandered with it. Each temple among the 51 Shakti Peethas has shrines for both Shakti and Kalabhairava, with the Shakti in Kankalitala addressed as “Devgarbha” and the Bhairava as “Ruru.” The belief is that Sati Devi’s bones fell at this sacred site.
