Activities to Enjoy at Sundarbans National Park

Exploring the unique landscape of Sundarbans National Park offers a range of thrilling activities. As the park’s terrain is best suited for aquatic adventures, visitors can immerse themselves in boat safaris and cruise experiences. Here’s an overview of the exciting activities available:

Boat Safaris: Sundarbans National Park is best explored by boat, as it is a predominantly water-logged region. These safaris are conducted by the government and come in various options to cater to different budgets. There are small boats for shorter excursions and larger boats for more extended trips. Visitors can choose between air-conditioned (AC) and non-AC boats. Reservations for boat safaris can typically be made a day in advance.

Cruise Adventures: For a more immersive experience, the government organizes one-night and two-night cruises. These cruises can accommodate groups of up to 50 people at a time. The two-night cruise covers popular watchtowers like Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, Jhingakhali, and Dobanki. The one-night cruise is a more affordable option and includes Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, and Dobanki watchtowers, excluding Jhingakhali.

Cruise Boats: Two boats, Chitralekha and Sarbajaya, are used for these cruises. Sarbajaya is particularly renowned for its offerings. These cruises generally begin and end in Kolkata. You can book these cruises online through the West Bengal Tourism website. Prices vary depending on the type of accommodation selected, such as lower deck, AC, non-AC, cabin, or couple’s cabin.

Private Boat Safaris: If you prefer a more personal and flexible experience, you can opt for a one-day private boat safari. These safaris typically start at 8:00 AM and conclude by 5:00 or 5:30 PM. The cost is INR 950 per person, with an additional INR 600 for an overnight stay. This price includes accommodation, food, and the safari itself. Keep in mind that additional charges may apply for video cameras, forest entry fees, and motorboat expenses, which are paid directly to the forest department.

Private Cruise Tours: For a more customized experience, private cruise packages are available. These include 2-night/3-day budget tours and 6-night/7-day luxury tours. Various operators offer these cruise options, such as Sundarbans Chalo, Vivada Sundarbans, Sundarbans Houseboat, Help Tourism Sundarbans Jungle Camp, and Tour De Sundarbans. The cruises typically begin at 8:00 AM, and prices range from INR 2,000 per person to INR 50,000 per person, depending on the selected package.

Sundarbans National Park offers a range of exciting experiences, allowing you to immerse yourself in its unique and diverse ecosystem. Whether you choose a government-operated safari or a private cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the beauty and wildlife of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site.
