Bhutan, a Buddhist Kingdom in the Eastern Himalayas, opened to the world about 25-30 years ago. It borders China to the north and India to the south, accessible only from the Indian side. Despite being a Kingdom with a King, Bhutan has a full-fledged democratic constitutional system. Mahayana Buddhism is the state religion, with about 20% of the population Hindu. The country boasts remarkable environmental conservation, with 60% forest cover and 51% protected land, the highest in Asia. It features diverse landscapes, from mountainous regions with subalpine vegetation to lush subtropical plains. Bhutan’s highest peak, Gangkhar Puensum (7570 meters or 24840 ft), remains unclimbed.

Historically, Bhutan once controlled large parts of northeastern India and Nepal but ceded territory during the Bhutan War of 1864. Today, it enjoys cordial relations with India. Bhutan opened to tourism in 1974, emphasizing “high value, low impact” tourism, with a daily fee of US$ 250 for most tourists. All visitors must travel on guided tours except for Indian nationals. Thimphu is the capital and a hub of tourist activity, while Paro and the Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) are popular destinations. Other scenic spots include Punakha, Bumthang, Phobjikha, and Haa Valley, ideal for trekking and camping in Bhutan’s carbon-negative countryside.book your Best Bhutan tour packages now!
