Joydev Kenduli Mela | Fair & Festival in West Bengal
Every year, a fair is held in honor of the poet Joydeb during the Bengali calendar’s Poush Sankranti or Makar Sankranti. The Bauls, a community of wandering minstrels, gather for the event, singing devotional songs accompanied by the melodic tones of the ektara, a one-stringed musical instrument. These Bauls set up 160 temporary hermitages at Jaydev Kenduli, staying there for approximately a month. It seems that they carry on the tradition of Jayadeva’s songs. Kenduli is situated along the banks of the Ajay River, and the commencement of the fair marks the auspicious day when Jayadeva is believed to have taken a bath at the Kadaambokhandi ghat of the Ajay River at Jaydev Kenduli.
Experience the enchanting Kenduli Mela 2024, a vibrant fair celebrated in Kenduli, the birthplace of the renowned poet Jaidev, located just 42 km from the tranquil Shantiniketan in West Bengal. Taking place on January 14, 2024, coinciding with Makar Sankranti, this festival is a breath of fresh air, offering respite from the monotony of everyday life.
At the heart of Kenduli Mela are the Bauls, mystic minstrels adorned in saffron attire, showcasing their unique musical traditions with the soul-stirring Ektara. Recognized by UNESCO as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity,” the Bauls’ performances convey profound philosophical perspectives through simple expressions. Their songs, with inoffensive yet powerful language, provide a captivating glimpse into life’s deeper meanings.
