Chandannagar, formerly spelled Chandernagore, is a Corporation city and former French colony situated 35 kilometers north of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja Walk Guide
The origins of Jagadhatri Puja in the former French colony of Chandannagar are shrouded in controversy. Some contend that the practice was initiated in the mid-1750s CE by Indranarayan Chowdhury, the Diwan of Krishnachandra, the esteemed Maharaja of Krishnanagar. Alternatively, another legend attributes the inception of Jagadhatri Puja to Maharaja Krishnachandra himself in 1762 CE. He allegedly initiated the tradition in his capital and subsequently instructed his Diwans across the kingdom to conduct the puja in their respective locales. Dataram Sur, his Diwan in Chandannagar, is said to have obediently commenced the first Jagadhatri Puja in late autumn 1762 CE.
