Birding In Kaziranga National Park

Birding In Kaziranga

unforgettable wildlife adventure in Northeast India with a tour of Kaziranga and Nameri National Parks. Kaziranga, renowned for its conservation efforts, boasts the largest population of Indian Rhinoceros and a plethora of other wildlife, including tigers, elephants, and numerous bird species. Nameri, established in 1985, offers sightings of Bengal Tigers, Asiatic Elephants, and a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 300 species, including the White-winged Duck. My journey began with a flight to Guwahati, followed by a scenic drive to Kaziranga. Three days of safaris revealed the park’s majestic mammals and avian wonders. Then, off to Nameri, where I spotted prized species like the White-winged Duck and Wreathed Hornbill, along with other winged beauties like the Green Cochoa. After a week immersed in Assam’s wildlife, I returned home with cherished memories and new additions to my birding list.

Birding In Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park, nestled in Assam, India, is famed for its Indian rhinoceros population but also beckons birdwatching enthusiasts with its diverse avian inhabitants. Here’s a concise overview:

Bird Diversity: Kaziranga hosts over 480 bird species, both resident and migratory. Notable sightings include the great Indian hornbill, Bengal florican, Indian roller, Asian barred owlet, white-winged duck, as well as eagles, herons, storks, and waterfowl.

Prime Time: November to April is ideal for birdwatching due to migratory influx and sparse vegetation, aiding bird spotting. Yet, resident species can be spotted year-round.

Hotspots: Wetlands like Kaziranga’s beels and the Brahmaputra River are perfect for waterbirds. Tall grasslands, marshes, and woodlands also offer diverse habitats.

Techniques: Hiring a local guide is wise for spotting and identification. Binoculars, a field guidebook, and a camera with a telephoto lens are must-haves.

Wildlife Encounters: Beyond birds, encounters with Indian rhinoceroses, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, swamp deer, and various reptiles and mammals are possible.

Conservation: Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prioritizes conservation. The park’s management works diligently to safeguard habitats and species.

Guidelines: Visitors must adhere to park guidelines to minimize disturbance. Respect for wildlife and the environment is paramount.

Embrace the tranquility of Kaziranga National Park and its captivating birdlife with patience, silence, and environmental reverence.
