Approximately 1 crore (10 million) pilgrims visit Gangasagar Yatra every year. Among them, around 70% travel by road using private cars, as it helps them save both time and money. They usually start early in the morning at 5:00 AM and comfortably complete the Kolkata to Gangasagar round trip within 12–14 hours, returning back to Kolkata by around 5:00 PM the same day. There is a common myth among people that if you travel to Gangasagar by cruise from Kolkata or Diamond Harbour, the journey will be faster. This is completely incorrect.
The truth is that if you travel by cruise, the entire process becomes time-consuming and much more expensive. Where you can reach Gangasagar by road in around 3 hours, a cruise may take 6–7 hours, depending on low tide and high tide conditions. If your entire road trip can be completed within approximately ₹6,500, the cruise tickets alone may cost around ₹250 per head (excluding other arrangements), making the overall expense higher.
Therefore, if you want to complete your Gangasagar Yatra on time and at the right cost, it is always better to travel by private cab by road.
