Kurumbera Fort, located in Gaganeshwar village about 27 km from Kharagpur, is an ancient structure preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments Act. Reached via Keshiari and the village of Kukai, the fort features a large courtyard, pillared corridors, and three domes over a raised platform. Built in the Odisha temple style using laterite stone, it likely dates back to the reign of Surja Banshi king Gajapati Kapilendra Dev (1438–1469), though some believe it served as a mosque during Aurangzeb’s era. Legends also link the site to Ram and Sita’s exile. Despite its historical significance, much about its origins remains unknown.
