Durga Puja, the largest festival of West Bengal, is celebrated across the state to mark Goddess Durga’s homecoming from Mount Kailash to her maternal home. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, as the goddess defeats the demon Mahishasura. On December 15, 2020, Kolkata’s Durga Puja was recognized by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage.’ This 10-day festival culminates in Bijoya Dasami, followed by a grand carnival where the idols are immersed in water, celebrating the goddess’s victory.
