Gorumara National Park Online Safari Booking
Gorumara National Park boasts a rich history dating back to the early 1890s when it served as a reserve forest primarily for timber extraction purposes. However, as deforestation threatened the local ecosystem, the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1949, aimed at safeguarding the diverse wildlife species residing within its borders. Initially established to protect the endangered Indian rhinoceros from rampant hunting, the sanctuary underwent expansion in the 1980s to encompass a broader array of wildlife species. Subsequently, in 1992, it attained the status of a national park. Derived from the local term “Goroom,” meaning “the land of high hills,” Gorumara National Park sits at the foothills of the Himalayas, providing a habitat for numerous indigenous tribes such as the Munda, Oraon, and Toto communities. Over the years, the park has played a pivotal role in conservation efforts, successfully reintroducing the Indian rhinoceros population to the area. It also shelters other endangered species including the Asian elephant and Indian bison. In recent times, the park has emerged as a prominent destination for ecotourism, with concerted efforts directed towards promoting sustainable tourism practices. Notably, Gorumara National Park contributes significantly to the conservation of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. Moreover, the park’s evolution has generated employment opportunities within surrounding rural settlements, particularly through eco-tourism initiatives, forest department engagement, and related endeavors.
