The Tarakeswar Shrabani Mela is one of West Bengal’s largest religious festivals, held every year during the holy month of Shraban (July–August). Lakhs of devotees, known as Jal Jatris, collect sacred Ganga water from Nimai Tirtha Ghat in Baidyabati and other nearby ghats before walking nearly 40 km barefoot to offer it to Lord Taraknath (Shiva) at the Tarakeswar Temple. Devotees believe that offering holy Ganga water during Shraban brings blessings, peace, and prosperity.
For Shrabani Mela 2026, the West Bengal Government has implemented extensive arrangements to ensure a safe and well-organized pilgrimage. CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring, police deployment, medical camps, drinking water facilities, bio-toilets, additional buses and trains, improved roads, and enhanced safety measures have been introduced along the Baidyabati–Tarakeswar route. Strict cleanliness initiatives, including a ban on single-use plastic, have also been enforced to provide a smooth and comfortable experience for millions of pilgrims.
