Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros
The Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros is one of the most iconic wildlife species found in the grasslands and forests of northeastern India and Nepal. Known for its distinctive single horn and armor-like skin, this magnificent animal can run at speeds of up to 40 km/h and is also an excellent swimmer.
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, making it one of the best places to spot this endangered species in its natural habitat. Adult males can weigh over 2,000 kg, making them the largest of the Asian rhinoceros species.
Conservation Efforts
Thanks to dedicated conservation programs by the Indian and Nepalese governments, along with wildlife organizations, the population of the Great Indian Rhinoceros has recovered significantly. Major protected habitats include Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Orang National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, and Nepal’s Chitwan National Park.
Today, the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros stands as one of India’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories and remains the star attraction of Kaziranga National Park.
