Bamakhepa – The Mystic Saint of Tarapith
Sadhak Sri Sri Bamdev, lovingly known as Bamakhepa, was born in Atla village, just 2 km from Tarapith, to Sarbananda Chattopadhyay. Born on Maha Shivratri (12th Falgun, 1244 Bengali Era / 1837 CE), he was deeply devoted to Ma Tara from a young age. Calling her “Choto Ma” and Mouliksha Ma “Boro Ma,” he completed intense spiritual practices and later devoted his life to helping people and protecting them from harm.
Tarapith Temple – Maa Tara
Located in West Bengal’s Tarapith village, the present temple was built around 300 years ago (Bengali year 1225). Designed in the traditional 4-chala Bengal style, it stands 64 feet tall. Artistic carvings of plants, flowers, Devi Durga, and scenes from Ram-Ravan’s battle decorate the temple, showcasing the region’s deep mythological and cultural heritage even during British rule.
